This pastel activity how-to guide is ideal for middle school or high school art students to learn how to use pastels. It covers 5 basic steps to use pastels successfully. Perfect for use in a visual journal, practice techniques in a sketchbook before a project, or as an early finisher or art sub plan.

This art guide pack includes:

  • Teacher notes on implementing the guide in different ways.
  • Pastels activity how-to guide (info on the front, example to follow on the back)
  • Art sub plans handout with supplies, instructions, and a checklist for students to follow

The printable handout covers how to use pastels including a supply list, starting with a light sketch, building layers, blending, repeating layering and blending, sharpening with lines, erasing smudges, and using a damp brush for a creamy look.

I love using this handout for visual journals. Visual journals are a perfect project for any middle or high school art class. Visual journals, or altered books, are my students' favorite projects of the year. It is a space for them to express themselves, experiment with materials, and take a break from regular projects. It is a great project for middle school and high school-age students.

The back of the worksheet shows step-by-step examples to drawing a pear using pastels. Students can follow along to create their own pear drawings. If you have the resources to print this on the back of the worksheet for each student, it is a great visual guide. If you are tight on color printing you can project this image while explaining the project or print a single version students can look at.

➢I have compiled ALL my visual journal resources (lesson plans, supply list, posters, worksheets, etc.) into one bundle pack. Check it out here.
