The printable handout covers how to use oil pastels including a supply list, starting with a light sketch, building layers, blending, repeating layering and blending, sharpening with the background, working light to dark, and using oil for a creamy look.
I love using this handout for visual journals. Visual journals are a perfect project for any middle or high school art class. Visual journals, or altered books, are my students’ favorite projects of the year. It is a space for them to express themselves, experiment with materials, and take a break from regular projects. It is a great project for middle school and high school-age students.
The back of the worksheet shows step-by-step examples to drawing an apple using oil pastels. Students can follow along to create their own apple drawings. If you have the resources to print this on the back of the worksheet for each student, it is a great visual guide. If you are tight on color printing you can project this image while explaining the project or print a single version students can look at.
