This assignment is meant for advanced art or AP® level art students and focuses on turning personal inspiration into a mixed media visual work of art. Learning how to express a personal feeling or opinion through a work of art is an incredibly important step in becoming an artist. This project is perfect for the start of the school year as a way to get to know your students.

Students are asked to share 25 things about them and complete five sentences. They then choose one of the five sentences to turn into a mixed media work of art. I love the process of making my students think about themselves, what describes them, what they are interested in, and it helps me get to know them better. They must use at least two different art materials and visually portray their inspiration on a medium-size canvas board.

All in all this pack has:

  • Lesson Plan (with big idea, national standards, vocabulary, step by step instructions, and more)
  • PowerPoint and PDF version presentation
  • Romare Bearden artist research sheet
  • Sketchbook assignment sheet
  • Artwork display sign
  • In-depth rubric

I include PowerPoint, Word docx, and PDFs of all my resources in one convenient zip file.

Want to not have to plan an entire year of assignments for your advanced class or a semester for your AP® Art class? Purchase the bundle of my advanced-level assignments and save $15.00. Check it out here.
