This high school advanced art, abstract painting project is ideal for juniors, seniors, or college-level students. This can be taught to a high school advanced art level course or incorporated into an AP® Art and Design (Advanced Placement® Art) course.

This project focuses on what creates a successful abstract work of art and pushes the students to work large scale.

The PowerPoint included in this bundle helps provide guidance through a range of examples, including ones from the artist exemplars  Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, and Mark Rothko to help guide the work of art. Abstract art is broken down into three simple elements, plus 3 supporting principles. Video clips are also included to help further explain the process of abstraction and interpretation of abstract art.

All in all this bundle pack includes:

  • A lesson plan (including big idea, essential questions, goals, vocabulary, national standards, supply, list, step-by-step instructions, and more.)
  • PowerPoint and PDF of the PowerPoint to help guide the students
  • Artist inspiration sheet
  • Sketchbook homework assignment
  • Guiding questions for art investigation
  • Critique reminder and talking point sheet
