This elementary sewing project introduces students to fiber arts and weaving using burlap, ribbon, and string as the base for a unique sewing design.
Introduce your elementary art students to the art technique weaving with this elementary sewing project. Designed for second-grade art students but perfect through early middle school, teach your students about the art of weaving by reverse weaving and adding ribbon and string into burlap.
Students are introduced to artwork by artist, El Anatsui, before removing strings from the weft of the burlap and sewing ribbon, string, and similar into the warp of the burlap. This elementary sewing project is the perfect intro to fiber arts because it is quick and teaches important techniques. 4 weaving styles are taught in this lesson.
